Thomas H. Rice Sr., 75, Somerset, formerly of Stoystown

Thomas H. Rice Sr., 75, of Somerset, formerly of Stoystown, passed on Oct. 28, 2012, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. Born May 18, 1937, in Somerset, he is the son of the late Carl Rice Sr. and Freda (Conner) Rice. He is also preceded in death by his wife Jane in 2008; sisters Fay Woy and Pat Young; and brothers Carl Rice Jr. and Claude Rice. Thomas is survived by his children Tammy Hottle and husband Graham of Berlin, Stacy Krisch and husband Ron of Somerset, Thomas H. Rice Jr. and wife Margi (Bernard) of Billings, Mont., Stoney Rice and wife Tammy (Johnson) of Stoystown, and Lonny Rice and wife Carla (Manns) of Price, Utah; grandchildren Tara (Hottle) Miller and husband Kevin, Trisha Hottle, Kelsey and Brantley Rice, all in Pennsylvania, Skip Rice and wife Angela (Konakis) of Tremonton, Utah, and Emily Rice, Valerie and Lauren Rice, all from Price, Utah, and Gabe Rice and wife Valerie (Hofmann) of Brighton, Colo.; great-grandchildren Dallen and Kailyn Rice of Utah and Teagan and Taelyn Miller of Pennsylvania; sister Jane Ogden and husband David of Berlin; and brother Dan Rice Sr. of Somerset. Thomas was a coal miner for GM&W Coal in Pa. and later, the Fetterolf Group, which led to his move to Utah where he served as a mine manager. He then worked and eventually retired from the Tram Electric Co. in Utah where he worked as a sales manager. He lived with Jane for 27 years in Utah before returning to Somerset. They loved traveling throughout the West and going on cruises. He was an avid Steelers fan. He spent a large part of his life in his workshop designing custom wood creations for family and friends. Of the thousands of pieces he created, several won first-place awards at the Utah State Fair, which brought him a great joy after retirement. Family and friends will be received from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday with a service to follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Reading Grace Brethren Church, pastor Larry Weigle officiating.  Private interment at Stoystown IOOF Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Reading Grace Brethren Church at 3449 Stoystown Road, Stoystown PA 15563.  Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset.
