John Z. "Zane" Varner, 82, of Somerset, passed on Dec. 7, 2012 at the In Touch Hospice House. Born Jan. 2, 1930, in Elton, he is the son of the late Earl and Muriel (Brewer) Varner. He is also preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Joan (Fichtner) Barron Varner in 2004; brothers William and Glenn Varner; and sister Mildred June. Zane is survived by his children: Deborah Barron Kepler and husband David of Allentown, and Susan Barron Perry of Carrollton, Texas; his grandchildren Danielle and Arielle Kepler; and brother E. Don Varner and wife Barbara of Geistown. He is also survived by his wife of 6 years Kay (Olson) Varner; children Peter Olson and wife Karen of Washington, D.C., Mathew Olson and wife Diane of Apex, N.C., Susan Reynolds and husband Casey of Elsah, Ill., Elisabeth Brugnone and husband David of Harmony, and Sarah Ware of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Joshua, Kelly, Eli, Emily, Daniel, Andrew, Mark, Hannah, Samuel, and Grace. Zane was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He was a longtime employee of the Crane Company and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. An avid golfer, Zane was a member of Somerset Country Club since 1962. A graveside memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment at Somerset County Memorial Park.
