Jane Carey Morawetz (nee Audrey Jane Carey), died Dec. 30, 2012, in Saint Augustine, Fla., after having suffered a stroke in August. She is survived by three children, Robert Carter Jr., Pennsville, N.J., Carey Carter Stanhaus, Chicago, Ill., and Amy Carter Canova, Flower Mound, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Somerset, to James Edgar Carey and Ruth Louise Gohn Carey. She began kindergarten at the Patriot Street School and graduated from Somerset High School in 1945. While at Somerset high, she recalled that she was in The National Honor Society, the editorial staff of the yearbook, president of the Ushers Club, in Drama Club, Latin Club, an alto in the Girls Quartet, and a cheerleader as well. She was remarkably pretty, popular and charming and much admired for her style, taste and poise. Jane had fond memories of close relationships and enjoyed many outings, musical events and picnics with her friends, while growing up in Somerset. In a recent Christmas card to Virginia Emerson (nee Beabes), she recalled their first- and second-grade teachers, Miss Weller and Mrs. Coder. She commented that Somerset was a “great beginning for us.” Virginia writes that Jane was an important link with her early years and education, and considers her death a remarkable milestone marking a friendship that lasted more than 80 years. Jane attended Maryland College for Women and Skidmore College. In 1947, Jane married the late Robert Charles Carter. As a naval officer’s wife, Jane recalled traveling across the country numerous times, during those early years. In 1978, Jane married the late Kurt Otto Morawetz in upstate New York. In the mid-1980s, they retired and moved to Saint Augustine. Kurt died in 2007. They enjoyed all that Saint Augustine offers: the sun and surf, tennis, concerts and shows, fine food, dance parties, and cruises. Jane’s professional life included public relations positions with the New York State Senate. She had a lifelong passion for travel, which she shared by helping others as a travel agent. As recently as 2008, Jane sailed Windjammers to the many islands of French Polynesia. Jane volunteered her time at EMMA Concert Association, Memorial Presbyterian Church (including service as a deacon), Betty Griffin House, Marineland Whitney Laboratories, and at public school and library reading programs. She was a member of the American Association of University Women. Friends and family of Jane and Kurt Morawetz will memorialize them at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at Memorial Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to EMMA Concert Association or Memorial Presbyterian Church. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
