Jack Morrison Brant, 91, of Berlin

Jack Morrison Brant, 91, of Berlin, died Feb. 20, 2013 at home. Born Sept. 20, 1921 in Somerset, son of Joseph Steward and Helen Grace (Morrison) Brant. Preceded in death by parents, and sister Natalie Burger. Survived by his wife of 65 years the former Betty Jane Glessner; children: Karen Annette married to Charles Wiltrout, Dayton, Ohio; Jacqueline married to Edward Smock, Ligonier and Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Douglas Steward Brant and wife Elena, Berlin; granddaughter: Heather Kristine Wiltrout married to Chad Klemens, Hudson, Ohio; and great-granddaughters: Natalie Grace and Meredith Kate Klemens. Jack graduated from Somerset High School in 1939 and later received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering from West Coast College in Los Angeles. He went on to work for North American Aviation in Los Angeles until being drafted by the Army Air Corps where he served 2-1/2 years. He came home to Somerset and worked with his father, who owned the Packard-Edsel dealership in town. Jack married Betty and they moved to Hagerstown, Md., where he worked for Fairchild Aircraft and helped design the "Flying Boxcar ." In 1950 they moved to Berlin where Jack and his father bought the H.F. Ball Planing Mill which then became Berlin Lumber Company. In 1985 he retired and sold the lumber company to his son, Douglas. He was a member of Berlin Brethren Church where he served as moderator, treasurer and deacon for many years. Past president of the Berlin Lions Club and Berlin Grove Association. Served on the Board of Directors of Ashland Theological Seminary and Ashland University. Jack earned his pilot's license at age 16 and was a lifelong pilot, having served as president of the Somerset Aero Club. He was an avid fisherman and turkey hunter. Jack shot a turkey last fall at the age of 91. He loved riding and building motorcycles. Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin.  Viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Berlin Brethren Church, Rev. Tom Sprowls, Jr. officiating. Interment Husband Cemetery. Jack will always be remembered by his friends and family for his incredible faith, not criticizing others, and his positive outlook on life.
