John J. "Jake" Hornig, 82, Meyersdale

John J. "Jake" Hornig, 82, Meyersdale, died March 27, 2013, at home. Born Oct. 4, 1930, in Meyersdale, the son of the late William E. and Grace “Madge” (Reynolds) Hornig. Preceded in death by his brothers: Herbert C., William Harold, James Samuel and Charles Hornig; and sister: Rhea Burt Survived by his wife, of 55 1/2  years ,the former Dawn Schrock; children: Barb Sparr and husband Leroy, Meyersdale; Gail Hornig, Pittsburgh; and John Hornig and wife Sue, Crofton, Md.; grandchildren: Sandi Byerly and husband Craig, Chelsea Hoover, and Chloe Sparr; and great-grandson, Preston DeVoe. Also survived by his sisters: Yvonne “Bonnie” James, Alice Firey, and Ada B. Saylor. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Jake was the assistant manager of the A&P Store for 10 years and retired from Prudential Life Insurance Co. after 28 years. A member of Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, where he served as an usher; Meyersdale American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 3504, and the Meyersdale F&AM Lodge 554. He was a charter member, past president and treasurer for 25 years for the Meyersdale Lions Club and a life member of the Meyersdale Elks Lodge 1951. Jake was with the group who shoveled the first dirt for the Maple Valley Pool. He served the community in any way he could. He always cared for others and would do anything to help. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, where service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Pastor Pete Kaltenbaugh officiating. Interment Meyersdale Area Union Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in his name to the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, 9 Beachley St., Meyersdale, PA 15552.
