Jack B. Shaffer, 89, Davidsville formerly of Hooversville, died April 16, 2013, at Laurel View Village. Born Oct. 31, 1923, at home in Hooversville. Preceded in death by great-grandparents Silas, a Civil War veteran, and Mary Snyder, grandparents Daniel and Bertha (Hamer) Shaffer, and parents Earl F. and Georgia Verdean (Snyder) Shaffer, and step-mother Theresa Donahue-Shaffer; wife of 41 years, Vivian L. (Boyer) Shaffer who passed away in 1992; brothers Daniel J. “Cork” and Jan D. Shaffer; and grandson Tyler Lee Shaffer. He is survived by sons: Drs. Joel E. and wife Christy Cooper Shaffer, Jeffrey L. and wife Kathleen Thomas Shaffer, and Jon Mark and wife Debbie Neubel Shaffer; and by grandchildren: Elizabeth, Kelsey, Elliott, Lucy, Brandon, Jordan and Travis Shaffer. He is also survived by sisters-in-law: Judy Shaffer, Ann Marie Shaffer and Carol Shaffer Alumbaugh. Mr. Shaffer was a graduate of Hooversville High School, Class of 1941. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Class of 1946. He was employed at Daniel Shaffer’s Inc., which was started by his grandfather in 1901, and by Shaffer’s Bottled Gas, both in Hooversville. He retired from working at the family business in 2010 and was a corporate officer at both companies. Jack served in the U.S. Army as a Technical Sergeant in the 214th Field Artillery from 1944-1945 in the European Theater. He married the former Vivian L. Boyer in 1950 in Hooversville. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the congregational council and taught Sunday School for over 50 years. He was a charter member of the Hooversville Lions Club, a Melvin Jones Fellow, was a Past President, and held many other offices. He was also a Past President of Forbes Joint School District which combined the Hooversville, Stoystown, and Quemahoning Township school systems and broke ground for the new building that combined those schools in Kantner in what is now the North Star Middle School. He served on the board of directors of the Hooversville National Bank, and the National Bank of Western Pennsylvania from 1962-1985, and was a past president of the National Bank of Somerset County. He was a past president of the Upper Stonycreek Joint Municipal Authority. He was a past vice president of the Hooversville Borough Council. Jack was also a fund raiser for the Boy Scouts of America and actively supported Troop 115 of Hooversville where his three sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He served on the board of directors of the Area Home Health Agency of Somerset County. Jack was also recognized with a 50 Continuous Years Voting Award. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Hooversville.
