Hazel Ruth Garlitz, 84, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, July 10, 2013 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Oct. 12, 1928, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Mable J. Showalter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Carl Garlitz; her grandson, William Matthew Beachy; brothers and sisters: Esther, John "Dick," Fred, Harriet "Peany," Sam, Dorothy "Jean," Mary Lee, Felicia, Elinor and Linda. She is survived by a sister, Carol "Susie" (Terry) Helman, of Burlington, W.Va., and the following children: Carla Jean (Bill) Beachy, of Ellicott City, Md.; Donna Marie (Richard, deceased) Schrock, of Perry Hall, Md.; Linda (Wayne) Leong, of Springfield, Va.; Thomas Leonard (Jenifer) Garlitz, of Joliet, Ill.; Mark Alan (Trish) Garlitz, of Salisbury; and Lori Ann Garlitz, of Salisbury. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the long-time owner of Garlitz Grocery in Salisbury and, as such, she knew almost everyone in Salisbury and the surrounding area. She was active at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in West Salisbury, where she served as a Eucharistic minister for many years. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Newman Funeral Home, Inc., 9168 Mason-Dixon Hwy., Salisbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Saturday, with Father Benoit Alloggia O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. A Rosary service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 8:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to either Hazel's favorite charity, Heifer International, or to St. Michael Roman Catholic Church.
