William L. Ash Sr., 66, Boswell, died Feb. 15, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Born March 30, 1946, in Somerset, son of Glenn and Ilga (Swank) Ash. Preceded in death by parents; father- and mother-in-law, James "Cecil" and Dorothy (Jones) Truscott; and stepmother-in-law, Vera Donahue-Truscott. Survived by wife of 46 years, the former Judith A. Truscott; children, Sheri, married to Kerry Conn, Jenner Township; William Jr., Boswell; Nicholas, married to Marlania Walker, Jenner Township; and Matthew, at home; and grandchildren, Austin, Ethan and Tristen Ash; and Jason Wiencek; brother, Ray Ash, Jenners; brother-in-law, James Truscott and wife Beverly, Somerset; nephew, Jeffrey Truscott and wife Barb and niece Melissa Truscott. Member of All Saints Catholic Parish, Jenner Rod & Gun Club and Boswell Post 461 American Legion. A 1964 graduate of the former Jenner-Boswell High School. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Owner and operator of the former Ash's Store, Boswell, and Ash's Floor Covering, Somerset. He was an avid hunter and golfer, and enjoyed watching Steeler games and attending family gatherings. Viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main St., Boswell, where vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday afternoon. Janice Gail Lape, 55, of Frederick, Md., formerly of Boswell, passed away Feb. 14, 2013 at the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, Md. Born Nov. 13, 1957 in Johnstown, she is the daughter of Robert E. and Dolores (Stahl) Lape of Davidsville. Janice was a 1975 graduate of North Star High School. She was employed as a health care recruiter at the Shady Grove Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital for eight years. Prior to that, she was employed at various other health care facilities throughout Pa. Janice was a member of the Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, Hollsopple and Frederick Church of the Brethren where she also sang in the choir. She was an avid birdwatcher, enjoyed golfing, reading, biking, skiing, exercise, making stained glass and was also a very active volunteer in the Frederick County community. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her partner Sharon Jacko; her siblings William Lape and wife Ruth, Jeffrey Lape and wife Sharon and Kevin Lape and his late wife Carol; her niece Lauren McDade and husband Shawn; and nephews Daniel, Christopher, Austin, Steven, Andrew and Jonathan Lape; and her great-nephew Hudson William McDade. She will also be remembered by her roommate Jeanne Jacko. Viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville. Irving Cassius Hall, 89, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Irving Cassius Hall, 89, West Palm Beach, Fla., passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, due to complications caused by a stroke creating a fall. Irving Cassius Hall was born in Quaker City, Ohio on June 17, 1923, the son of Alden Hall (descendent of the founder of Quaker City, John Hall) and Anna Mabel Edgerton Hall, both members of the Society of Friends of the Ohio Yearly Meeting, both deceased since May, 1970. Two brothers, Clarence of Minerva, Ohio and Herbert Hall of Georgetown and one sister, Clara Vaal from Franklin, Tenn. are all deceased. Irving is survived by son, Fred A. Hall, a resident of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; daughter, Martha Landau of West Palm Beach, Fla., and foster son, William Grimes, resident of Clarksville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He graduated from Quaker City High and he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in England and was discharged with honors at the end of the war. Irving married Mary Louise Cain on Feb. 24, 1947 in Clinton, Pa. who passed away on Dec. 11, 2012 Just 2 months before him. Irving had a 30+ year career working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, first as a lockmaster on the Ohio River near Georgetown, Pa. and then the Youghiogheny Dam in Confluence where he lived and worked as a supervisor in the maintenance department. He enjoyed talking at the yearly folk festival in Quaker City about his life as a Quaker. He also enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, gardening and wood working. He was a member of the American Legion and the Lions Club in Confluence. He was very supportive of his church by volunteering his time in many ways including bible studies, missionary work, Deacon duties, repairs of all kinds along with financial aid to missionaries. Services are at the Stillwater Meeting House in Barnesville, Ohio at 11 a.m. on Monday. Following will be a short military service at the gravesite ending with a lunch back at the Stillwater Meeting House, finishing at 3 p.m. Arrangements in charge of Thornblack Funeral Home, Quaker City.

Preceded in death by husband Ralph J. Durst; infant son Larry; sisters: Olive Vought, Lottie Mathias, Beulah Tressler, Melda Butler, Viola Hutzel, Ida Reckner and Pearl Show; brothers: John Butler, Alton Butler and Mark Butler. Survived by her son James W. Also survived by his wife of 34 years the former Jody L. Ickes; sons, Dustin, married to the former Tristan Thomas, Friedens, and Jordan, Winter Garden, Fla.; granddaughter Aviana Grace Shockey; brother Blair married to the former Janet Walker, Friedens; sisters, Susan, married to Lonnie Kensinger, Everett, and Roseann married to Fay Henry, Manassas, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews; and father- and mother-in-law Squire and Phyllis Ickes, Boswell. A 1974 graduate of Somerset High School. Former truck driver owner-operator for 18 years, and employed by Ickes Financial Services, Boswell, as a life insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual Life, and a C.S.A. Member of Friedens Lutheran Church. Mark received 19 years because of a gift of life from a kidney donation. He was a volunteer speaker on behalf of the Center for Organ Recovery and Education. He enjoyed playing poker with his buddies, antique automobiles, and telling stories. Walter L. 'Wally' Kiel, 90, of Portage, passed away Feb. 16, 2013 at Maple Winds Care Center. Born June 2, 1922 in Conemaugh, the son of Harry and Johanna (Busch) Kiel. Preceded in death by parents; brothers: Edgar, Paul, Robert and Thomas Kiel; sisters, Florence Froggatt, Helen Fallecker, and Margie Kiel. Survived by loving wife of 64 years, Viola (Smardo) Kiel; sons, David Kiel, married to the former Sharon Yusko, Portage; Les Kiel, married to the former Margo Mastaler, Cresson; and Brian Kiel, married to the former DeAnna Dickey, Somerset. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Ashlee and fiance Todd Holsopple; Justin and special friend Mary Plunkett, and Walter Nicholas. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Graduate of Portage Borough High School and Vale Tech of Blairsville. U.S. Navy Veteran of W.W.II. Retired train dispatcher from Conrail. He played football for the semipro Portage Bulldogs and served as coach. He also played with and coached Junior Legion baseball and coached St. Joseph's grade school football. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame and enjoyed hunting and fishing at the family camp in Clearfield. A lifelong active member of St. Joseph's Church and secretary of People Helping People. Betty Murray, 88, of Salisbury, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at her residence. Born March 16, 1924, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Sadie (McClain) Patton. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Darrell “Mike” Murray and one sister, Grace Berkshire. Mrs. Murray was a police officer for Salisbury Borough and also was a server for Thomas Sandwich Shop, Salisbury. She was a member of the Salisbury Firemen’s Auxiliary, Meyersdale Medical Center Auxiliary, Salisbury American Legion Auxiliary, Salisbury VFW Auxiliary, 40 et 8 Auxiliary and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Surviving are two sons, Larry L. Ashbrook and wife, Sharon, Berlin, Vaughn Murray, Kansas; two daughters, Janice Houpt and husband, Sam, Berlin, Kimberly Lindeman and husband, Chuck, Salisbury; eight grandchildren, Jessica Persson and husband Gregory, Michael Ashbrook, Kedrick “Bud” Lapp, Jr. and fiancee, Jennifer, Renee Jones and husband, Bill, Terra Andree and husband, Michael, Katrina Snyder and husband, Marty, Benjamin Smith and special friend, Rachael, Isaiah Smith and 16 great-grandchildren. Frank Edward "Ed" King, 87, Rockwood, passed on Feb. 15, 2013, at the In Touch Hospice House. Born Aug. 30, 1925, in Upper Turkeyfoot Township, he is the son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Cramer) King. He is also preceded in death by his wife Shirley (Pletcher) King in 2004; brothers Ralph, Wilmer, Winfield, and Howard King; and sisters Zelma Pletcher, Nellie Bungard, and Martha Pletcher. Ed is survived by his daughter Diane L. Smith of Rockwood; grandsons Craig Smith and wife Kimberly (Keslar), Bryan Smith and wife Crystal (Parks), and Matthew Smith and wife Kim (Bowman), all of Rockwood; and great-grandchildren Molly Jo, Taylor, Paige, Courtney, and Thayne Smith, and Marlee Parks. Ed was an infantry veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II serving in Central Europe and Germany. He was a long-time contractor and sub-contractor with his brother-in-law Roy Pletcher (Pletcher & King Contracting).  He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local  2274 and the Somerset Masonic Lodge 358. He was also a member of the Ursina American Legion. Ed was a longtime member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Scullton where he held many positions over the years. He enjoyed church activities, being in the woods, hanging out with his grandchildren, and spending time with his friends and neighbors. Alphonse T. Mascherino, 69, Somerset

The Rev. Alphonse T. Mascherino, 69, Somerset, died Feb. 15, 2013, at the In Touch Hospice House after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Born June 4, 1943, in West Chester, he is the son of the late Dominick and Emily (Fiore) Mascherino. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1976 in the Archdiocese of Altoona/Johnstown, Alphonse served in several dioceses in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, California, and Delaware. His ministries included hospital chaplain, evangelical communications/broadcasting, and pastoral ministries. Alphonse founded the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville two months following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and served as director of the Chapel for 12 years before retiring this month due to health concerns. The Chapel was established to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and all innocent people who died in the terrorist attacks. Surviving family members include sisters, Mary Jean Manion and husband Thomas, Alamagorda, N.M., and Genevieve Burghart, Long Island, N.Y.; and brothers: James Mascherino and wife Marie, and Fred Mascherino and wife Gail, West Chester, Joseph Mascherino and wife Joan, and Andrew Mascherino and wife Kathy, Downingtown, and Louis Mascherino and wife Sharon, and Dominick Mascherino, Coatesville. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and friends, including dear friends Don and Kay Kemp, Salisbury. Friends will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Somerset, Father Daniel O’Neill celebrant. Alphonse will then return home to Downingtown with friends being received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, with a funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church at 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Phyllis I. Gower, 74, Confluence, passed away Feb. 19, 2013, at Somerset Hospital. She was born April 1, 1938 in Stoystown, a daughter of Calvin S. and Kathryn (Myers) Tressler. Her parents, husband Dale Gower and brother Paul Tressler preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Ray R. Phyllis was an avid supporter of the Somerset County Humane Society and at various times in her life was employed at the sewing factory in New Centerville, Coleman Mfg., Somerset, Turkeyfoot Valley School cafeteria and as a van driver for disabled school children. Harold A. Welch Sr., 61, of Somerset, passed on Feb. 18, 2013, at the In Touch Hospice House. Born July 21, 1951, in McKeesport, he is the son of Christine (Carter) Welch of Somerset and the late Paul Welch. He is preceded in death by his father; wife Gail (Mognet) in 2012; sister Cheryl Flanagan; step-father Richard Blanchard; and brother-in-law John Fleming. Harold is survived by his son Harold A. Welch Jr. of Somerset; and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law from Gail’s side of the family. Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He loved to fish, go to Pirates games, watch WWF Wrestling, and was a big fan of Elvis Presley. He was a member of the Somerset Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Somerset Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with a service to follow at 1:30 p.m., pastor Scott Ream officiating. Dolores Jean (Stahl) Friedline, 77, of Friedens, died Feb. 19, 2013 at her home. Born June 13, 1935 in Somerset, the daughter of Stewart E. and Edna (Pritts) Stahl. Preceded in death by parents; husband Kenneth Blair Friedline who died May 26, 1994; children: Blair, Kevin, Cindy Ann and Brad Friedline; brothers: Elwood, Donnie, Leonard and Stewart Stahl Jr., and sister Helen Mostoller. Survived by children: Brenda J. Friedline of Friedens; Randy L. "Jake" Friedline of Boswell; Brian L. Friedline, Keith E. Friedline, Kristy S. Mitchell and husband David, all of Friedens; grandchildren: Wendy Swanson and husband Kevin; Christopher Zanzarella; Jonathan Jones; Brandon, Halley and Tessa Friedline; Joshua Sarver; Tiffay Friedline; Travis and Kendra Mitchell; great-grandchildren: Brittany, Lynsey, Chloe, Landon, Carter, Keatin, Keira, Tucker, Kolt and Roman. Dolores is a 1953 graduate of Somerset Joint High School. She worked as a secretary for Mr. Gilmore and Gilmore Manufacturing from 1954 to 1956, leaving to raise her children and be co-owner and bookkeeper for K.B. Friedline Trucking. She was a very active and lifelong member and president of the Listie Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Faith Lutheran Church. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, and one hour prior to the service at the church where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, Somerset, with the Rev.
