Calvert W. "Abe" Rhodes, 91, Berlin, died Aug. 1, 2012, at Meadow View Nursing Center. Born May 21, 1921, in Sipesville, a son of Rev. H.Q. and Rosey (Lybarger) Rhodes. Preceded in death by parents, wife of 51 years the former Avis Ickes, sisters Clara Wisler, Dorothy Mosholder, Mary Tattarelli, and Lois Cameron, and brother William. Survived by his sons; Leslie H. married to the former Faye Willison, Bedford; and Terry married to the former Carol Leer, Berlin; grandchildren: Joyce Smith and husband Daniel; Steven Rhodes; Michael Rhodes and wife Rachael; and Lori Rhodes; great-grandchildren: Kerri; Dakota; Steven Jr.; Nikki; Andrew; Benjamin; and Hannah; great-great-grandson Haddon; and sister-in-law Dorothy Rhodes, Altoona. He was a 1940 graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School and a U.S. Army Sgt. during World War II. He was a lifelong mechanic, working at Meyersdale John Deere, Berlin Chevrolet, and Sperry Drilling. Member of Beachdale Church of the Brethren, where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served on the board, and was a life member of VFW Post 7295, Berlin. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin where service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Rev. Joe Brown officiating.
