Walter L. 'Wally' Kiel, 90, of Portage

Walter L. 'Wally' Kiel, 90, of Portage, passed away Feb. 16, 2013 at Maple Winds Care Center. Born June 2, 1922 in Conemaugh, the son of Harry and Johanna (Busch) Kiel. Preceded in death by parents; brothers: Edgar, Paul, Robert and Thomas Kiel; sisters, Florence Froggatt, Helen Fallecker, and Margie Kiel. Survived by loving wife of 64 years, Viola (Smardo) Kiel; sons, David Kiel, married to the former Sharon Yusko, Portage; Les Kiel, married to the former Margo Mastaler, Cresson; and Brian Kiel, married to the former DeAnna Dickey, Somerset. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Ashlee and fiance Todd Holsopple; Justin and special friend Mary Plunkett, and Walter Nicholas. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Graduate of Portage Borough High School and Vale Tech of Blairsville. U.S. Navy Veteran of W.W.II. Retired train dispatcher from Conrail. He played football for the semipro Portage Bulldogs and served as coach. He also played with and coached Junior Legion baseball and coached St. Joseph's grade school football. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame and enjoyed hunting and fishing at the family camp in Clearfield. A lifelong active member of St. Joseph's Church and secretary of People Helping People. Vi and Wally received the Ubi Caritas award. Friends received from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church, Father Walter Moll, Celebrant. Committal in St. Bartholomew Cemetery, Wilmore. Military Rites by Portage Veterans Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers family requests donations to People Helping People, c/o St. Joseph's Church, 509 Caldwell Ave., Portage, PA 15946.
