Alphonse T. Mascherino, 69, Somerset

The Rev. Alphonse T. Mascherino, 69, Somerset, died Feb. 15, 2013, at the In Touch Hospice House after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Born June 4, 1943, in West Chester, he is the son of the late Dominick and Emily (Fiore) Mascherino. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1976 in the Archdiocese of Altoona/Johnstown, Alphonse served in several dioceses in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, California, and Delaware. His ministries included hospital chaplain, evangelical communications/broadcasting, and pastoral ministries. Alphonse founded the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville two months following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and served as director of the Chapel for 12 years before retiring this month due to health concerns. The Chapel was established to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and all innocent people who died in the terrorist attacks. Surviving family members include sisters, Mary Jean Manion and husband Thomas, Alamagorda, N.M., and Genevieve Burghart, Long Island, N.Y.; and brothers: James Mascherino and wife Marie, and Fred Mascherino and wife Gail, West Chester, Joseph Mascherino and wife Joan, and Andrew Mascherino and wife Kathy, Downingtown, and Louis Mascherino and wife Sharon, and Dominick Mascherino, Coatesville. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and friends, including dear friends Don and Kay Kemp, Salisbury. Friends will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Somerset, Father Daniel O’Neill celebrant. Alphonse will then return home to Downingtown with friends being received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, with a funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church at 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel, Shanksville, PA 15560 or In Touch Hospice at P.O.
