Richard C. Ferguson, 71, Somerset, passed on May 3, 2013, at Somerset Hospital. Born Nov. 14, 1941, in Bedford, he is the son of the late Cloyd and Alice (Snyder) Ferguson. Richard is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna Jean (Shippey) Ferguson; children: Thomas Ferguson and wife Jody, Berlin, Patricia Everett and husband Jeffrey, Jerome, and Deborah Shriner and husband Joseph, Clarksville; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother Larry Ferguson, Shellsburg; and sisters Kathy Stockenus, Mann’s Choice and Jo Ann Cross, Meyersdale. Richard was a longtime employee of Somerset Barn Equipment. He was a member of the Glades Tractor Club, and a member of the 8th Society of Farm Women, a group which includes both men and women in Somerset County. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved to attend auctions and spend time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Pastor Jay Shaffer officiating. Vernon W. “Ike” Bittner, 80, Meyersdale, died May 3, 2013, at home. Born Oct. 17, 1932, in Summit Township, the son of Edward L. and Nellie (Emeigh) Bittner. Preceded in death by his parents; wife Clara (Wahl) Bittner; brothers: Edward, Clarence, and Donald “Mike”; and sisters, Vivian and Dorothy. Survived by daughters, Vicki Skoff and husband Phil, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Christine Gnagey and husband Jerry, Meyersdale; granddaughter, Melissa Skoff, Cuyahoga Falls. Also survived by brother Duane “Joe” Bittner, Meyersdale; sisters: Lois Werner, Meyersdale, Shirley Ewen, Carmichael, Calif., and Delores Laderer, Jensen Beach, Fla. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and he is a retired cement finisher with the Cement Masons Local 526, Pittsburgh. A member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Meyersdale, VFW Post 3504, Meyersdale and American Legion Post 112, Meyersdale. Edith Elizabeth (Grundy) Harrison

Edith Elizabeth (Grundy) Harrison died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Onalaska Care Center. Edith was born to John and Hazel (Sapp) Grundy on Dec. 14, 1922, near Somerset. She married Robert Lock in 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1983. She married Jared Harrison in 1996 and he preceded her in death in 2010. Edith was a gifted artist and talented musician who enjoyed playing the organ and piano. Edith is survived by her son, Daniel (Merideth) Lock; grandchildren, Ann Marie (Joseph) Weber and Dan (Lisa) Lamour; great-grandchildren: Max, Jazmyne and Anastasia Weber, Faith Powell, Alexander and Julia Lamour. Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at Olivet Beacon of Light Lutheran Church (French Island). Pastor Luanne Sorenson will officiate and burial of her cremains will be buried at a later date in Walker Cemetery near Shanksville. Edith’s family would like to thank the staff at the Onalaska Care Center for their kindness and compassion that they always showed toward Edith and also to Pastor Luanne Sorenson for her assistance to the family in Edith’s final days. Charmaine "Grammy" Soha, 79, of Somerset, died May 4, 2013 at In Touch Hospice House. Born Oct. 12, 1933, in Somerset, she is the daughter of the late Harry and Vivian (Custer) McVicker. Also preceded in death by a brother, Harry McVicker. Survived by children: Gary Soha and wife Suzanne of Boswell; Cindy Thomas of Jerome; Jeff Soha and wife Amy of Boswell; Tim Soha and wife Monica of Perry, Mich.; and Lisa Snyder and husband Bill of Friedens; grandchildren: Ben Soha and wife Julie; Emily Neff and husband Craig; Jessica DeAngelo and husband Kelly; Nikki Tait and husband Jared; Laura Moye and husband Kyle; and Rachel Snyder; great-grandchildren: Maria Soha, Kipton DeAngelo and Wesley Tait; sister of Janet Greathouse of Michigan; Dolly Snyder of Stoystown; Lorraine Hollan of Stoystown; and Ray McVicker and wife Flo of Boswell. Charmaine was a 1951 graduate of Forbes High School and was employed by Dorfman Hoffman as a sewing machine operator and supervisor. Friends received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Robert H. Clyde L. Davis, 79, of Somerset, passed on May 4, 2013 at home. Born May 26, 1933 in Somerset, he is the son of the late Donovan and Mary (Aultz) Davis. He is also preceded in death by his wife Janet in 2010; granddaughter Angie Weigle; brothers Ray, Willard, Jay, Jim, George and Cliff; and sisters Hazel and AnnaMae. Clyde is survived by his daughters Pamela Colflesh and husband Daniel of Friedens; Donna Swaner and husband Robert of Johnstown; and Gail Robertson and husband Timothy of Somerset; grandchildren: Heather Snyder and husband Jason; Joshua Boozer, Brandon Lohr, Jarrod Colflesh and wife Danielle; Courtney Lohr, Collin Robertson, Daniel F. Colflesh III and Mathew Colflesh; great-grandchildren, Rylee and Noah Snyder and sister Joan Croyle of Somerset. Clyde was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force in the Korean War where he served with the 841st EAB as a mechanic. He was a retired truck driver who worked for McKelvey Oil in Johnstown. He enjoyed playing his guitar and played in bands throughout the county including the Country String Pickers. He continued to play throughout his life, most recently with The Gospel Strings, up until his passing. Clyde loved tearing things apart and rebuilding them. He also loved to spend time with his family. He was a member of Sought Out Ministries in Somerset. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Pastor Kathy Hay officiating. Nellie Bernice Christner, 86, of Meyersdale, went home to be with her Lord, on May 4, 2013. She was born June 11, 1926 to the late Albert and Minerva (Paul) Meyers. Preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Suder, and brother Paul Meyers. Survived by her beloved husband Mack Christner, and sisters: Jean Glass and husband Dale of Grantsville, Md.; Shirley Ramsey of Fredericksburg, Va.; and Linda Gaskell of Worthington, Ohio. Also survived by step-children: Valerie (Christner) Brant and husband Ben of Meyersdale; Durbin and wife Wendy of Hoover, Ala.; Tim and wife Stephanie of Garrett; and Jim Sanner and wife Deb of Meyersdale; step-grandchildren: Cheryl Opel, Amanda Hartman, Jeremy and Jarryd Christner, Logan Christner, Kristie Blubaugh and Kelli Smith; great-grandchildren: Tyler Opel, Alivia and Grayson Christner, and Matthew and Kalena Blubaugh. She was beloved by numerous nieces and nephews and her loving companion "Rocky." Bernice was retired from Meyersdale Shirt Factory where she worked for many years with her best friend Barbara Meyers. She and Mack loved to go on bus trips and devoted themselves to caring for friends and family. She was a loyal and dedicated member of the Meyersdale Grace Brethren Church, where she faithfully served as Sunday school teacher and AWANA leader for many years. Friends will be received on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the M. Ray Leckemby Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Randy Haulk officiating. Interment to follow at Meyersdale Area Union Cemetery, Meyersdale. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Meyersdale Grace Brethren Church or the Diabetes Association. Donald E. Dickey, 78, of Somerset, died peacefully at 12:20 a.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013. Born July 6, 1934, in Somerset, he is the son of the late Earl and Leona (Whipperman) Dickey. Also preceded in death by his stepfather, Glenn Chabol. Survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois Jane (Miller) Dickey; children, Chris Dickey and wife Rulinda of Somerset, and Joni Doolittle and husband Scot "Doc" of Bakersville; grandsons; Josh Dickey of Grove City, and Zacheri Doolittle of Bakersville; brothers, Jerry Chabol and wife Ginny, and Denny Chabol, both of Somerset, and Rich Burkett and wife Maria of Friedens. Former employee of Exxon for 32 years and owner of Don's Custom Barns for 25 years. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced in the outdoors that Don loved so much. He will be surrounded by green grass, tall trees and blue sky. The service will be conducted by family and friends. It will be a time to mourn, share memories, see old friends, heal ourselves and celebrate the life of a wonderful man. Please bring your memories of Don's life to share with us. Don wore jeans and shorts, friends are invited to wear their favorite clothes, casual or dress. Nancy Jean Czernecki, 58, Jones Mills, passed away Monday, May 5, 2013. She was born April 11, 1955, in Somerset, a daughter of Herbert C. and Marian V. Walker. She was a member of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Past Worthy Matron of the Ligonier and Somerset Order of the Eastern Star. Nancy was a loving wife, mother and teacher, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing the piano, singing with choral groups, needle work and reading. Nancy is preceded in death by her in-laws, Edward and Ethel Czernecki. She is survived by her husband, Edward J. Czernecki and their daughter Lauren; one sister, Laura Miller and her husband, Douglas; four brothers; Thomas Walker and his wife, Brenda, Gerald and Michael Walker and Daniel Walker and his wife, Dawn; nieces and nephews, Beth, Josiah, Lucas, Joshua, Tara, Seth and Kayla; two sisters-in-law, Sandy Invernizzi and her husband John and Joanne Harvey and her husband Scott. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the L. Boyd Snyder Funeral Home Inc., 322 Church Street, Donegal, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Wayne Gillespie officiating. Private interment will be held in the Mt. Virginia Swank, 86, Berlin, formerly Friedens, died May 5, 2013, at Somerset Hospital. Born Jan. 8, 1927, she is the daughter of the late Arthur W. and Margaret (Maurer) Gilbert. Also preceded in death by her husband Melvin Swank; brothers, Grant and James Gilbert; and sister, Idella Manges. Survived by her children, Mrs. Keith (Linda) Shirey of Latrobe, Mrs. Robert (Cheryl) Vought of Somerset, Edward Swank and wife Cindy of Friedens and Mrs. Randy (Janet) Shawley of Berlin. Grandchildren: Becky Lowden, Keith Shirey Jr., Greg Vought, Susan Ankeny,  Roger Vought, Alan and Steve Swank. Also nine great-grandchildren. Sister of: Opal Viola Yorkony of Somerset, Fae Baker of Michigan, Helen Fye of Listie, Emily Harkcom of Georgia, Alma Bittner of Ferrellton and Dwight Gilbert of Stoystown. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Member of the Berlin Alliance Church and a graduate of Somerset High School. She is retired from Dorfman & Hoffman. Richard H. Hynicka, 87, formerly of 1003 Orchid Way, Mountville, died May 2, 2013. He was born on May 13, 1925. He was a resident of the Mennonite Retirement Community, a caring, loving home away from home: Thank You. He was the husband of Anne M. Dickey Hynicka for 65 years. Richard was the son of the late Thomas and Nellie Gast Hynicka and he lived his entire life in Lancaster County. A graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, Class of 1943, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was employed by RCA for 38 years and retired from being the Lancaster site plant manager. He enjoyed being active and immersed himself with intramural baseball, basketball, bowling, home remodeling, ponies and horses, Black Angus steer, sheep and a menagerie of interesting fowl. In 1992, he designed and supervised the construction of his retirement home at 1003 Orchid Way and enjoyed it for 20 years. He also maintained his wife's childhood Dickey homestead farm of six generations, "Belfast", located in Berlin. He volunteered in his community as President of the PTA for Mountville Elementary School, Mountville Borough Councilman and served on the committee to manage the Froelich Community Park and Pool. He provided and maintained a ball field for local youth who did not participate on the organized community baseball teams. He taught the senior high Sunday school class and led the Youth Fellowship at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He later attended Grace Baptist Church. He always made time to support his sons' many activities. He will be sorely missed. Surviving in addition to his wife, three sons: Robert Richard Hynicka, Taylors, S.C.; Robin Michael Hynicka, Philadelphia and Steven Franklin Hynicka, Mountville. Five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Three sisters: Dorothy Hartman, Lancaster; Margaret Rutt, Aurora, Colo., and Betty Overly, Lititz, and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by one sister: Ruth Bare and one brother: Walter Hynicka. The funeral service will be held at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 114 West Main St., Mountville, on Friday, May 10, 2013, at 11 a.m. with his son, Rev. Robin M. Hynicka, officiating. Pickle was the son of the late Frank and Edna (Bittinger) Deal and he was also preceded in death by a brother, Norman Deal. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy; son, Bryon Deal and partner, Scott Bradfield, of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a daughter, Kimberly Myers and husband, Scott, of Salisbury; grandsons, Ryan Deal and wife, Elanea, of Finleyville; Shayne George and wife, Misti, of Somerset; Scotty Myers and Cory Myers, of Ebensburg; a sister-in-law, Martha Deal and three little bright stars, his great-grandchildren, Mercy Deal, Oliviah George and Kolton George. Agnes "Peg" B. Dedik, 92, The Patriot, Somerset, formerly of Boswell, died May 7, 2013, at The Patriot. Born Dec. 2, 1920, in Boswell. Daughter of George Sr. and Elizabeth (Miller) Dedik. Preceded in death by parents, infant sisters Mary and Elizabeth, sister Theresa Blucas and brothers Stephen and George Jr. Survived by brothers Walter Dedik, Jerome and Robert Dedik, Boswell, sisters Verna Sendek, Jerome, and Virginia “Ginny” married to Edward Ference, Greensburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Gloria Dedik and her family for all their loving care. Peg lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for many years where she worked as a waitress. She then moved back to Boswell to help care for her mother. A member of All Saints Catholic Parish.  She was also an avid reader. Jeffrey L. Walters, 51, of Somerset, passed on May 9, 2013 at home. Born Dec. 22, 1961 in Somerset, he is the son of James and Emma (Thompson) Walters of Somerset. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Ray Walters. Jeffrey is survived by his parents and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
