Clifford E. Thiel, 92, formerly of Sipesville, died May 14, 2013, at The Patriot. Born Dec. 22, 1920, in Jennerstown, son of Charles C. and Agnes S. (Allen) Thiel. Preceded in death by parents; first wife, the former Dorothy Deist, Nov. 25, 1949; second wife, the former Grace M. Shockey, May 31, 2007; sisters Lillie, Sarah, Florence and Elizabeth; and brothers John, Lewis and Irvin. Survived by daughter Linda M., married to Terry Surgoine, Gray; son Roy I., married to Mary Funk, Rowlesburg, W.Va.; grandchildren Donald (Kim) Messer, Mildred (Jon) Gansor, Tressa (Don) Moats, Eugene (Tammy) Thiel and Sandra Thiel. Also survived by 14 great-grandchildren. Member of Christ Casebeer Evangelical Lutheran Church, Somerset Pike, and lifetime member of the DAV. Army veteran of World War II. Artificial inseminator for Curtis Breeding Service and Select Sires for many years. Enjoyed raising sweet apples in his own orchard. Was the last surviving member of his immediate family. McConnell, 79, Stoystown, died May 12, 2013, at Somerset In-Touch Hospice.  Born March 7, 1934, in Lincoln Township, a daughter of Daniel and Goldie (Moore) Sarver.  Preceded in death by parents; first husband Russell J. Frampton; daughter Deborah A. Frampton; brothers James, John, Daniel, Floyd, Telford, Harrison, Lloyd, Elwood and Carl Sarver; sisters Elizabeth Dietrick, Audrey Thomas and an infant sister; and close friend Mildred Grace. Survived by her children: Cary (Charlotte) Frampton, Somerset; Betty Stitely, Stoystown; Anthony Frampton, Hooversville; Bonnie (Dale) Dunmyer, Friedens; and Candace (Lee) Marker, Boswell; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and four great-great- grandchildren; Sister Shirley (Arthur) Brougher, Somerset; special friends and family: Nancy Gisbrecht, Sandi Sheeler, Joseph Tirko, Larry Stitely and James McConnell. She was a waitress for many years and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Hooversville. She was a loving mother and loved spending time with her family and friends. James Ray Pyle, 81, of Somerset, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 16, 2013. Born Feb. 8, 1932, the son of Ralph and Ruby Pyle. Preceded in death by his parents and two infant brothers, Donald and Frederick. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna June (Barron) Pyle and three loving daughters: Dixie, married to John Kelly, Rockwood; Brenda married to Fred Berkey, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Holly, married to Timothy Hearth, Somerset; also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a graduate of Somerset High School and served in Alaska during the Korean War in the United States Army for the special forces. Jim's professional career consisted of being a coal land manager in Somerset County for Fetterolf Coal, Action Mining and Amfire Coal Co. He worked full time until he was 79 years old. He truly enjoyed his work. He lived for his Savior and his family. He attended the New Beginnings Outreach Center and the Milford United Methodist Church, where he served a as Sunday school superintendent, teacher and trustee. One of his greatest pleasures was to sing hymns of the faith while being accompanied by his daughter. He enjoyed golfing and family get togethers. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Milford United Methodist Church, where a celebration of Jim's life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Milford United Methodist Church with Reverends Kurtis Frampton and John Phipps officiating. John R. Sullivan Jr., 69, of Bakersville, passed on May 16, 2013 at Somerset Hospital. Born Oct. 1, 1943 in Somerset, he is the son of the late John R. and Mary (Atchison) Sullivan. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris (Rosey) Sullivan; children: John R. Sullivan III and wife Elizabeth of Lancaster; Barry Sullivan of Pittsburgh; Andrew Sullivan and fiancee Laurie Christner of Somerset; and Tammy Bowser and husband Ernie of Shanksville; grandchildren: Ernie, Johnny, Shianna, Quinn, Drew, and Levi; great-granddaughter Jayden; and brothers and sisters: Nola Bittner and husband Larry of Lancaster; Michael Sullivan and wife Jane of Listie; Dan Sullivan and wife Carol of Lancaster; Martin Sullivan and fiancee Veronica of Shanksville; Noreen Brown and husband Dwight of Augusta, Maine; Allen Sullivan and wife Roxanne of Shanksville; Nila Brant and husband Ken of Somerset; and Kay Sullivan of Somerset. John was a retired truck driver. He loved to fish and camp, and will be greatly missed by his dogs Sarge, Diesel, Tina, and Lucky. Theodore "Ted" Russell Lytle, 64, of Perryopolis, passed away at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. He was born in Confluence on Nov. 3,1948, the son of the late Calvin and Jean Dively Lytle. Ted was a very active member of the Gospel Alliance Church. He retired from U.S. Steel after 30 years working as a millwright. Never one to sit still for very long, he worked for the Perryopolis Auto Auction after retirement. He was a proud veteran serving with the United States Marine Corps during two tours of Vietnam and one tour in Desert Storm. He retired from the United States Marine Corps after 22 years service as a gunnery sergeant. He was a Untied States Marine Corps Reservist stationed at Connellsville Airport. He was an avid golfer, playing in the Jefferson Estates Golf League, a past member of the Cactus Golf League and the Moose Golf League. He was an officer in the Moose 092 in Perryopolis, a member of the Marine Corps League of Connellsville, and the VFW Post 7250 of Confluence. He was a gentle, kind and generous man, and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 42-1/2 years, Donna K. Peck; a son, Russell Scott Lytle; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Pravlik and husband, Charles; a beloved grandson, Charles Russell Pravlik; the following brothers and sisters: Mary Jean "MJ" Krajacic and husband, Darwin; Lois Meteney; William Lytle and wife, Karen; Donald Lytle and wife, Tammy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents. Richard Miller McQuade, 94, of Stoystown died May 15, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Nov. 28, 1918 in Berlin, son of Andrew and Eva Ellen (Miller) McQuade. Preceded in death by parents, step mother Anna (Romesberg) McQuade, half sisters Anna Louise Kuzupas and Isabell Brewer, and half brother Edward McQuade. Survived by his wife of 74 years, the former Ila R. Zimmerman; daughter Colleen E. married to Gary L. Bentz, Stoystown; and son David R. McQuade married to the former Ann Hayward, Idaho; granddaughters: Kristi married to Brian Hanlon and Tiffany married to Joel Landis; and great-grandsons: Zachary and Garrett Hanlon, and Dylan Landis. A 1937 graduate of Shade High School. A World War II Army Veteran receiving two Bronze Stars. He served in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Rhineland, received the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and W.W. II Victory Medal. Former employee of Rockingham Light, Heat and Power Co., Central City, and Penelec. Member of Kantner United Methodist Church. Elwood F. Garlitz, 84, Berlin, died May 17, 2013, at Meadow View Nursing Center. Born Sept. 30, 1928, in Greenville Township, son of Simon and Lydia (Yutzy) Garlitz. Preceded in death by parents and step-father Herbert Fidler. Survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Mary Poorbaugh; sons, Barry, Berlin, and Allan, married to the former Jana Morgan, Oklahoma City, Okla.; granddaughters, Christine and Karen Garlitz; brother Edison (Shirley) Garlitz, Berlin, and sister Pauline Werner, Confluence; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and other family. Korean War Air Force Veteran and retired Federal Aviation Administration maintenance inspector. Member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Berlin, Meyersdale American Legion and D.A.V. Viola L. (Rosenberger) Nace, 75, Addison, passed away May 18, 2013, at her home with her family by her side. She was born Sept. 23, 1937, in Addison Township, a daughter of the late Henry and Maude (Fike) Rosenberger, Clifton Mills, W.Va. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Edward; three children: daughters, Cindy Lytle and husband William, Confluence, and Penny Martin and husband Mike, Markleysburg, son Edward C. Nace and wife Cathy, Confluence; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brother, Blaine Rosenberger, Markleysburg, and Albert Rosenberger, Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. At Viola’s request her body was donated to WVU Medical Center in Morgantown, W.Va. There will be no viewing, visitation or funeral service.

Blaine Edward Miller, 78, Springs, died May 17, 2013, at Cherry Hill Assisted Living, Accident, Md. Born Feb. 25, 1935, in Springs, he was the son of the late Myron G. and Grace O. (Moser) Miller. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine (Stanton) Miller, March 17, 2012; one sister, Elnora K. Miller; and one brother, Elton Miller. Mr. Miller was a professional land surveyor, having been licensed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. He was a member of Springs Mennonite Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher and a member of the Springs Cemetery Committee. He was also a member of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Western Maryland Society of Surveyors and the American Chestnut Society. Surviving are one son, Mitchell James Miller and wife Susan, Frostburg, Md.; two brothers, Dick Miller and wife Emma and Gary Miller and wife Greta, all of Springs. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, Md. Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Eric Haglund officiating.Interment will be in Springs Cemetery. Mr. Joseph C. Tulenko, 80, of 11410 Airport Road, Waynesboro, died at 6:25 p.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013, in his home. He had been in failing health for the past two months. Born April 1, 1933 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset County, he is the son of the late Michael Tulenko Sr. and Susan (Trusko) Tulenko.  He lived his early life in Somerset County. He graduated from Somerset High School with the class of 1951. Mr. Tulenko served with the United States Army from March 31, 1953 until his honorable discharge on March 18, 1955. He mostly served in Germany. He and his wife of over 44 years, Janet E. (Heil) Tulenko, were married on July 27, 1968 in Somerset County. They have lived at their present residence for the past 40 years. Mr. Tulenko worked as a machinist for Mack Truck in Hagerstown, Md. He retired in 1991 after 28 years of service with the company. He was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Waynesboro, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Tulenko enjoyed golf, bowling, baseball, and extended family get togethers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Greg Tulenko of Crestview, Fla. and Carol Harbaugh and her husband, Dale of Somerset; two grandchildren, Michael Harbaugh and Amy Trimpey; four great-grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Gavel of Somerset; Ann Zadzora of Cleveland, Ohio; and Margie Dipre of Cleveland, Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-son, Terry E. Shaulis; and five brothers and sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, in St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Rev. John B. Bateman officiating. Clyde R. Walker, 84, Somerset, died May 19, 2013 at Siemon’s Lakeview Manor. Born Aug. 25, 1928, in Somerset Township, he is the son of the late Russell F. and Enola (Fritz) Walker. Also preceded in death by a brother Glenn M. Walker. Survived by his wife, Elda (Tipton) Walker, children: Ronald R. Walker and wife Rhonda of Greensburg, Joyce Ann Burton and husband Chuck of Denver, Colo., and stepdaughter, Linda Berkley and husband Doug of Somerset. He and his wife volunteered for Meals On Wheels and he enjoyed going to the monthly truckers lunches, gardening, bowling, square dancing and traveling. Ella Mae Etling, 82, of Meyersdale, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 19, 2013 in the Western Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, Md. She was born Dec. 14, 1930 in Connellsville a daughter of the late Edward and Ina Evelyn Haile Lewis. Mrs. Etling was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter 12 and the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren. She is survived by four children, Edward Mulnix and his wife Vickie of Meyersdale, James Mulnix and his wife Kathy of White, Sandra Baer and her husband Richard of Meyersdale and Kimberly Schaefer and her husband George of Grafton, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one sister Evelyn Nicholson and her husband Homer of Normalville; brother-in-law Wayne Etling and a cousin and close friend Barbara Whittaker. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband John G. Etling in 2007; two brothers David and Robert Lewis; sister-in-law Delores Etling; niece Mary Ann Etling and nephew David Etling. Jerome Layton “Jerry” Tinkey, 69, Somerset, died May  20, 2013, at his home. Born Feb. 28, 1944, in Middlecreek Twp., son of Floyd W. and Maggie (Sleasman) Tinkey. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Robert, Clyde and John Tinkey, sister Ruth Barron, and an infant sister and twin infant brothers. Survived by granddaughter: Colleen Knopsnyder and fiance Mark Walker of Meyersdale, great-grandchildren: Joelle, Jason and Clara. Butler, Tarentum; daughters, Elaine Cary and husband, Everett, Fort Hill and Dolores Humbertson and husband, Larry, Frostburg, Md.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Alvie, Lehigh Acres, Fla., Glenn and Roy, both of Fort Hill; sisters, Freda Edmonson, Lorain, Ohio, Shirley Beitzel and Dorothy Jean Hutzel, both of Grantsville, Md. He was preceded in death by brothers, Stewart, Charles, Hugh, James and Jack and sisters, Florence Rugg and Leona Butler. Ralph was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fort Hill and retired from Westinghouse Broadcasting.
