Allen Grove, 70, of Fort Hill, passed away Dec. 2, 2012 at In Touch Hospice House of Journey's Rest, Somerset. He was born June 30, 1942 in Mill Run, Md., a son of the late Floyd and Thelma (Frazee) Grove. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anna Mae (Lancaster) Grove; a daughter, Beth Suppok and husband Matt, Pittsburgh; son, Terry Grove and wife Kara, Addison; grandchildren, Grant and Kate Grove; and a brother, Terry Russell Grove and wife, Donna, Friendsville, Md. Allen was a member of the Addison United Methodist Church. For the past five years he coped with kidney dialysis and at the time of his death was awaiting a transplant. He worked as a mechanical engineer for numerous companies, the most recent being Lincoln Contracting of Somerset and Hoover Conveyor, Meyersdale. After his retirement he continued to work as an engineering consultant. He truly loved his family and his work. He was also a talented artist and enjoyed traveling and the outdoors. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Arthur J. Gotjen officiating. Homer C. Renner Jr., 63, of Central City, died Nov. 29, 2012. Born Sept. 5, 1949, the son of Homer C. and Pauline J. (Spangler) Renner. Preceded in death by parents, grandparents, step-father Lloyd Hampe, sister Arlene and mother-in-law Miriam Moore. Survived by wife, the former Karen Moore; son Charles and wife Kristine, Central City; daughter Keri-Ann; grandchildren: David and Durwin Miller, Kyle Snowden, Chase and Kaden Renner and his princess, Madison. A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and former employee of Thiel's and JLG Industries. He was a member of the American Legion and the Johnstown Street Survivors car club. Thomas Robert Brick, 77, of Berlin, passed on Dec. 3, 2012, at the In Touch Hospice House. Born April 30, 1939, in Somerset, he is the son of the late Robert and Helen (Ellis) Brick. He is also preceded in death by his wife Betty Ann Brick in 2009. Thomas is survived by his daughters Tanya Sarver and husband Shannon of Shellsburg and Susan Brick of Lavansville; grandchildren Erin and Kyle Sarver and Skylar Brick; and great-granddaughter Hayden Leed. Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the NRA. He loved to hunt and fish, especially rattlesnakes. He also enjoyed studying history. Fred William Emerick, 85, of Fairhope
Fred William Emerick, 85, of Fairhope, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at his residence. Born May 3, 1927, in Fairhope; he was the youngest and last surviving child of the late George Valentine and Maretta Pearl (Clites) Emerick. Fred attended the one-room school in Fairhope. In 1945 at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. Upon being discharged, he married his childhood sweetheart, Sara F. Cummins. She preceded him in death in 2005 after 57 years of marriage. Fred worked for several years at the Celanese before moving to Baltimore, Md. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel for 33 years until his retirement in 1984. After retirement, Fred and Sara returned to Fairhope, and enjoyed spending winter at their home in Brandon Fla. He enjoyed hunting, riding his lawn mower, crossword puzzles and spending time with family and friends. Fred was a faithful member of Fairhope Community Church, where he served as a greeter and bell ringer. He is survived by his children, Cheryl E. Norris and husband, Richard, Skyesville, Md., Dawn C. Emerick and husband, Jose Carrio, York; Keith M. Chipps of Bonaire, Ga., Carla A. LeCain and husband, David, Bel Air, Md., and Susan C. Pfeil and husband, Michael, Abingdon, Md.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the Fairhope Community Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor James Swauger officiating. Friends will be received at the church for one hour immediately prior to the service. Burial will follow at Comps Cemetery, Hyndman, PA, with military honors by the Ft. Bedford Honor Guard. Twila Pauline "Gug" Ogburn, of Jenner Township, Somerset County and Washington, D.C.
Twila Pauline Ogburn "Gug", passed on to heaven on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the age of 92 years. Gug (a nickname for grandma given by first grandchild, Angela, when she was two years old), was the loving mother of three, grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 14. She was extremely proud of her family, with a loving heart, only an extraordinary person could impart. Twila was born in Jenner Township, Somerset County, on Aug. 17, 1920 to Lawrence and Margaret (Blough) Speigle. She grew up a farm girl and became a registered nurse, working at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., which was one of the loves of her life. Taking care of others before self was a theme of her life. She is predeceased by the following brothers and sisters and spouses: Richard (Helen Spisak) Speigle, Paul (LaVerne Cable) Speigle, Edith (Ray Miller), Oscar Speigle, Erma (Norman Hostetler), Cora Speigle, Dalton (Dorothy Wentz who survives) Speigle. Twila was married to John Mark Ogburn (1921-2002). They had three children, Roy (Jean Wentz) Ogburn of Glencoe; Marvin of Harrisonburg, Va.; and Joyce (John Cash) of Triangle, Va. Gug has 12 special grandchildren: Angela (Michael Noyes), Betsy (Stephen Konefal), Valerie (Tod Bramble), Lydia (Dean Mulcaster), Elisha Ogburn and Ruston (Jenna Zorn) Ogburn; Erin (Frank Policastro) and Joshua Ogburn; and Jennifer, Pamela, Jessica and Heather Cash; and 14, soon to be 16, great-grandchildren, Madalena, Natalia and Suzannah Noyes; Ella, Thea and Jonas Konefal; Cooper and Eliot Bramble; Ackerly and Lincoln Mulcaster; Avery, Gentry and Camry Ogburn and Vesper Ogburn. A new Policastro child from Erin and Frank and a new Ogburn child from Jenna and Ruston, are scheduled to arrive within a week. All of her family gave Gug so much joy and she will always lend strength and inspiration to each of them. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Springs Mennonite Church, Springs. John Z. "Zane" Varner, 82, of Somerset, passed on Dec. 7, 2012 at the In Touch Hospice House. Born Jan. 2, 1930, in Elton, he is the son of the late Earl and Muriel (Brewer) Varner. He is also preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Joan (Fichtner) Barron Varner in 2004; brothers William and Glenn Varner; and sister Mildred June. Zane is survived by his children: Deborah Barron Kepler and husband David of Allentown, and Susan Barron Perry of Carrollton, Texas; his grandchildren Danielle and Arielle Kepler; and brother E. Don Varner and wife Barbara of Geistown. He is also survived by his wife of 6 years Kay (Olson) Varner; children Peter Olson and wife Karen of Washington, D.C., Mathew Olson and wife Diane of Apex, N.C., Susan Reynolds and husband Casey of Elsah, Ill., Elisabeth Brugnone and husband David of Harmony, and Sarah Ware of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Joshua, Kelly, Eli, Emily, Daniel, Andrew, Mark, Hannah, Samuel, and Grace. Overly, former owner of Green Garden, Inc. of Somerset; daughters Stephanie Laysayko and husband Larry of Valparaiso, Ind., and Ruth Chester and husband Alden of Suffolk, Va.; step-daughters Linda Kellner and husband Jeffrey of Slate Lick and Betsy Rea and husband Roger of Oakmont; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
