John L. Barnick, 93, Jenner Township, died Dec. 12, 2012, at Somerset Hospital. Born Nov. 28, 1919, in Jenner Township, son of Steve and Mary (Nagy) Barnick. Preceded in death by parents; sister, Pauline Hemminger; and brothers, George and Edward. Survived by wife of 64 years, the former Betty Jane Adams; children, D. Sue, married to Robert R. Berkey; Larry J., married to Carol Bumbarger; and Dennis E., married to Deborah Lehman, all of Jenner Township; and Debbie J. Schaefer, St. Francis, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and sister, Minnie, married to Robert West, Romeo, Mich. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Marjorie Barnick, Jenner Township; and Annabelle Barnick, Jennerstown; and numerous nieces, nephews and other in-laws. World War II Army veteran, member of Laurel Trinity Lutheran Church, Jennerstown; Somerset County Farm Bureau; and Pennsylvania Holstein Association. A 40-year member of International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 66. He was a retired Jenner Township farmer. Elwood Wayne Whipperman, 86, of Friedens, died Dec. 13, 2012 at Somerset Hospice House, Somerset. Born Nov. 14, 1926 in Berlin, the son of Elwood Ray and Helen Mae (Brant) Whipperman. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, the former Frances Ruth Forney who died June 5, 2003. Survived by children: Susan Mathews, Sally Whipperman, both of Somerset; Patti Burkett and husband Terry of Pittsburgh; Mark Whipperman of Friedens; grandchildren: Stevie Mathews-Meyers and husband Cole of Miami Beach, Fla.; Ryan Burkett and wife Rebecca of Pittsburgh. Richard Van Deusen, 69, of Rockwood
Richard Van Deusen, 69, of Rockwood, passed on Dec. 11, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Aspinwall. Born Sept. 30, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, he is the son of the late Clark and Ruth (Allen) Van Deusen. Richard is survived by his son Dr. Mathew A. Van Deusen and wife Kathryn of Pittsburgh; daughter Rebecca V. Van Deusen and Kelly Shaulis of Somerset; grandchildren: Alexandrea, Kaylee, Cameron, Aidan, Quinn, Olivia, and Cash; brother, Roger Van Deusen of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; and sister Judy Schulte of Rialto, Calif. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam as a member of the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, Delta Co., 1965. He was a Purple Heart recipient for injuries received in combat. A graveside service with full military honors was held at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, the place of interment. Elizabeth K. "Betty" Hosmer, 92, Confluence, passed away Dec. 13, 2012 at Kamp's Personal Care Home, Markleysburg. She was born Jan 3, 1920 in Garrett, a daughter of Albert D. and Emma (Herwick) Tressler. Her parents, husband, Stephen Roger Hosmer Jr., six brothers and a sister preceded her in death. She is survived by daughters Emma Ruth Marascalco and husband, Lewis, Pleasant Hills; Darlene Morrison and friend Trent Langley, Uniontown; and Nancy Hosmer, Confluence; a son, Stephen Roger Hosmer III and wife Sandy of Confluence; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Confluence and worked as a cashier at the former Acme Market in Confluence until her retirement. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., the hour of service, today at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence. A service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Foster officiating. Mary Louise Cain Hall, 88, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, in West Palm Beach Fla. She is the daughter of the late Fred and Pearl (McConnell) Cain, Clinton. She was preceded in death by siblings: Thelma Reckner, Betty Wiles, and Kenny Cain; and one grandson, Stoney Grimes. She is survived by her husband, Irving C Hall; children: Fred A Hall and wife Nancy, Pisgah Forest, N.C., Marty Landau and husband Cal, Palm Beach, Fla., and Bill Grimes and wife Laura, Clarksville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Rooker, Imboden, Ark.; and a brother, Harold Cain, Clinton. Mary was born Dec. 10, 1924, at home near Raccoon State Park, Beaver County, Clinton. She graduated from West Allegheny High School, Imperial, and began work with the Pa. Railroad in Pittsburgh. After marriage on Feb. 24, 1947, she became a housewife in Georgetown. She moved to Confluence in 1960 and after her husband's retirement in 1980, moved to Quaker City, Ohio. She was a life member of DAR and enjoyed many craft hobbies, Ladies Aid Society, Garden Club and canning fruit and vegetables from her large garden. She was faithful to attend church and supported her husband in service in the church and community. She enjoyed being a snowbird from Quaker City, Ohio, to Sebring, Fla., for 25 years. The funeral service will be at the gravesite at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Richland Cemetery along Shannon Road in Quaker City, by Thorn-Black Funeral Home.

Dorothy Evelyn Reese (nee Miller), of Stow, Ohio
Dorothy Evelyn Reese (nee Miller) passed away peacefully in Stow, Ohio on Dec. 15, 2012 at the age of 89, to be joined with Frank, her late husband of 64 years. Dorothy was a homemaker who loved her flowers, gardening and crocheting. She spent many hours canning and preserving the bounty of her and Frank's gardens. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Stow for over 50 years, where she was very active as a deaconess, in Guild, Vacation Bible School, and many, many other activities. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Reese, her parents Ray and Nettie Miller, son Tom Reese and brothers Jim Miller and Jay Miller. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Janice (Leon) Richardson of Corona, Calif.; son Tim (Susan) Reese of Munroe Falls; daughter-in-law Janet (Tom) Reese of Dublin; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Tim (Sarah) Reese of Cuyahoga Falls, Danny and Emily, Amy (Joe) Santuomo of Tallmadge, Lillian and Jacob, Todd Reese of Munroe Falls, Casey Richardson and Jennifer Richardson of Corona, Calif., Kristy (Ryan) Carlson of Dublin, Reese and Tommy; sisters Willadeen (John) Shumaker of Washington and Ruth (Jack) O'Baker of Somerset; brothers Bob Miller of Cuyahoga Falls, Bill Miller, Jack Miller, Dale Miller and Don Miller of the Somerset area; sister-in-law Alverda Gary and brother-in-law Floyd (Mary Catherine) Reese of Somerset and numerous nieces and nephews. She lived a full and wonderful life and will be deeply missed. Douglas K. Ashbrook, 33, of Somerset Pike, Boswell, died Dec. 15, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center. Born Aug. 9, 1979 in Johnstown, the son of Arthur Douglas and Janet (Neri) Ashbrook, Boswell. Preceded in death by grandparents Kelly and Helen Neri and Arthur and Katherine Ashbrook. In addition to his parents, he is survived by wife, the former Monica Pettitt; sister, Helen Ashbrook and brother-in-law, Shawn Leskovich, Jennerstown; father and mother-in-law, Alan and Jennifer (Aust) Pettitt, Jenners; sister-in-law Christina Pettitt, Manchester, Maine; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and beloved dogs Buddy Lee and Jack. A 1997 graduate of North Star High School and SCTC, Somerset. A teacher's aide in the carpentry department at SCTC. A member of the 5th VA Company H Civil War Reenactors, Pennsylvania Trapper's Association and Tangsoodo. A lifelong member of the Jenner Community Sportsmen where he was caretaker, past president and helped raise trout. He was also a Hunter's Education instructor and Trapper's Education instructor and an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. Doug was a childhood cancer survivor. John Henry Zimmerman, 91, Salisbury, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Meyersdale. Born Dec. 1, 1920, at St. Paul, he was the son of the late Norman and Mary (Wisler) Zimmerman. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Max Willard Zimmerman and one sister, Jean Kemp. Mr. Zimmerman was a heavy equipment operator for Jones Coal Co., Grantsville, Md. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was the recipient of the purple heart and the bronze star. He was a member of Walker-Harris Post 8769, V.F.W., Salisbury and the Salisbury-Elk Lick Hunting Club. Surviving is his wife, Bernice R. (Schardt) Zimmerman; two sons, Larry Zimmerman and wife, Roseanne, LaVale, Md.; Kenneth Zimmerman and companion, Jenny Fiscus, Meyersdale; one daughter, Donna Broadwater and husband, James, Swanton, Md.; one brother, Robert Zimmerman and wife, Margaret, Salisbury; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Louis Gaston Helmick Jr., 92, of Fairmont, W.Va., died peacefully on Dec. 14, 2012. He was born July 14, 1920, son of the late Louis G. and Harriet (Smith) Helmick. He attended public school in Fairmont and later, Mercersburg Academy Prep School in Mercersburg. He graduated from Cornell University in 1943 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He then entered the U.S. Army and served as a captain during World War II. In 1947 Mr. Helmick joined Joy Manufacturing Co. of Pittsburgh, where he retired in 1979 as its president and chief operating officer. He held successive assignments at the Franklin and Claremont, N.H., plants. In 1954 he moved to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh as vice president of manufacturing and was successively elected senior vice president, executive vice president, president and chairman. He was elected to the board of directors of Joy Manufacturing in 1958. After his retirement from Joy Manufacturing in 1979, he served as president and chairman of Helmick Corp. in Fairmont from 1980-1987. He was a member of the American Mining Congress, AIME, National Coal Association, the Coal Mining Institute of America, Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and served on the board of directors of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. Survivors include his wife Betty Pekar Helmick of Charleston, W.Va., one daughter, Susan T. Helmick of Santa Monica, Calif., two sons, Louis G. Helmick III and daughter-in-law Patricia of Fairmont and David G. Helmick of Fairmont; two grandchildren Garner Helmick and Jennifer Helmick McGlincy, two nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Susan Helmick and Harriet Wenger. Chester R. Lensbouer, 71, of Somerset, passed on Dec. 18, 2012, at the In Touch Hospice House. Born June 23, 1941, in Listie, he is the son of the late Chester M. and Katherine (McKnight) Lensbouer. He is also preceded in death by his brother Ralph Lensbouer. Chester is survived by his sons Ronald and wife Michelle (Hottle) of Friedens, James and wife Margie (Lewis) of La Vale, Md., Daniel of Somerset, and Jeremy and wife Brianna (Kallman) of Somerset; grandchildren Jacob, Tyler, McKinley, Kaitlyn and Emily Lensbouer; sisters Patricia Rood and husband the Rev. Bryan Rood of Anderson, S.C., and Connie Motil of North Carolina; brother Irvin Lensbouer and wife Johnna (Ferre) of Somerset; sister-in-law Linda Lensbouer; special sister-in-law and caregiver Deborah Merdian of Somerset; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Chester was a graduate of Jenner Boswell Joint High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War. He was a former Somerset Borough policeman and a retired employee of the Somerset Foundry. He attended Laurel Hill Tabernacle and loved hunting and fishing.
