Charles M. "Sonny" Heining Jr., 71, of Rockwood, died Dec. 19, 2012, at the In Touch Hospice House. Born March 4, 1941, in Somerset County, he is the son of the late Charles M. Heining Sr. and Laura Cooper Reckner Heining. He is also preceded in death by his brothers Frank, Bruce and Ed Reckner, and sisters Rosie Purbaugh, Hazel May and June Shaffer. Sonny is survived by his sons Charles H. Heining and wife Linda of Somerset and Lee Heining of Rockwood; grandchildren Brooke Black and husband Andrew of Stausburg, Brandi Hooper and husband Milo of York, Mandy Freas of Harrisburg, and Jessica Freas, Curtis Heining, Evan Heining and Corrina Baer, all of Somerset; great-grandchildren Lucias, Noah, and Curtis Jr.; sister Phyllis Emerick of Berlin; brother Donald Reckner of Rochester; ex-wife Ila Heining Stiffey of Somerset; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sonny was a retired truck driver who worked for Cooper & Jarrett and Eazor Express. He was a member of the Casselman United Methodist Church, and loved outdoor activities. She was born Sept. 6, 1920, in Upper Turkeyfoot Township, a daughter of Alexander and Mattie Jane (Younkin) Ohler. Her parents, husband, Loyal Ray, sons, Robert R. and David C., sisters, Elsie Kreger, Alice Porterfield, and Mildred Ohler and brothers, Charles and Harold Ohler preceded her in death. Florence Elizabeth Zimmerman Calvert, 91, Waynesburg, formerly of Spraggs, died at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, in the Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg. She was born Tuesday, Feb. 08, 1921, in Spraggs, a daughter of the late William G.C. Zimmerman and Goldie Mae Hixenbaugh Zimmerman. Mrs. Calvert was a member of the Blacksville Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school for several years. She was a member of the Women’s Society and the WCTU. She was a member of the East Franklin Grange, the Pomona Grange and the State Grange. She was also a life member of the Greene County Retired Teacher’s Association. Mrs. Calvert was a former member of the Greene County Farmers Association. For 16 years she worked as a cook for Central Greene School District and was the auditor for Wayne Township for several years. Her Husband, Truman Russell Calvert, whom she married on Sept. 9, 1939, died Nov. 30,1996. Surviving are two sons and their wives: Thomas W. (Leanne) Calvert, Berlin, and Robert Earl (Sarah) Calvert, Mercer; five grandchildren: Jeff Calvert, Steven Calvert, Scott Calvert, David Calvert, and Christine Reed; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Calvert was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are four sisters: Cecyle Wise, Mabel V. Phillips Hillberry, Nellie R. Garee, Clemmie B. Longstreth; three brothers: George W. Preceded in death by parents; husband of 45 years, Tony J., on Dec. 19, 1991; sister, Leona Nenstiel; and brothers, Louis and Frederick. Survived by sons, Dr. Anton, married to Anne Caporuscio, Marstons Mills, Mass.; and Frederick, married to Dawn M. Hollern, Jenner Township; grandchildren, Anton; Benjamin; Lyndsey, and husband, Zack Lepley; Courtney, and husband, Erik Paffett; and Bethany; great-grandson, Cooper J. Co-owner and operator, along with her husband, Tony, of Alpine Acres Christmas Tree Farm, founded in 1953, and currently operated by her son, Fred. Margaret was a record-setting typist and shorthand-writer at Johnstown High School. As a young woman working as a stenographer in Washington, D.C., for the government, Margaret was selected to accompany the ANGLO American Committee of Inquiry to Europe as a verbatim reporter in 1946. The committee was charged with offering a solution to the ARAB-Jewish conflict in Palestine and the European Jewish refugees who filled the displaced persons camps in Europe. Beginning in January of 1946, the committee started in London and moved to Mainland Europe, Cairo, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. Margaret returned to the United States via the Queen Mary. After marrying and raising two sons, Margaret worked for many years as a court stenographer in the Somerset County Courthouse, having retired in the mid 1980s. John William Compton, 70, of Meyersdale, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at his son's home. Born Nov. 1, 1942, in Meyersdale, he is the son of the late Ward S. and Eva (Miller) Compton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Theresa "Cookie" (Krause) Compton and a brother, Samuel Compton. Mr. Compton was a foreman for the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. He was a member of the St. Paul Wilhelm Church, Salisbury V.F.W. Home Aid, Salisbury Sportsmen's Club and Meyersdale Moose Lodge.
