Walter Shaffer Jr., 84, of Rockwood, passed on Oct. 23, 2012, at the In Touch Hospice House. Born June 25, 1928, in Brothersvalley Township, he is the son of the late Walter and Cora (Dickey) Shaffer. He is also preceded in death by his wife Lois Jean Shaffer in 1998; sisters Velma Romesburg, Mary Alice Shaffer, and Iva Shumaker; and brothers Blaine and Galen Shaffer. Walter is survived by his children Kenneth Shaffer of Rockwood, Stephen Shaffer of Somerset, and Robin Shaffer and companion Randy Boden of Kuhntown; grandchildren Kirsten Croyle and husband Devon and Michael Shaffer; sisters Dorothy Romesburg, Grace Shumaker and husband Forrest, Violet Romesburg, Erla Judy and husband Floyd and Virginia Harned and husband Fred; and brother Melvin Shaffer and wife Nancy. Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean War, and a retired employee of the Agway Feed Mill in Somerset. He was a member of the Rockwood Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed repairing and restoring antique furniture, and was an avid gardener who was very proud of his garden. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors, especially deep sea fishing. Also preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Simon Reynolds. William “Bill” Lucius Wable, 90, formerly of Addison, passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of Oct. 24, 2012 at Rest Haven Nursing Facility in York, where he had resided since January. Born March 1, 1922 in Ohiopyle, he is the middle child of the late Isaiah Carlton and Hazel May (Close) Wable, the brother of the late Celia Agnes Wable Kemp of Confluence and the late Roy Wilbur Wable of Spokane, WA. He is preceded in death by his three wives, Janet Arlene Theis (aka Lucia Deeley) Wable, the mother of his three children; Florence Nedrow Zimmerman Wable, and Myra Kreger Sechler Wable. Also preceding him in death is his oldest son, Ralph Carlton Wable, Kent, Ohio. Surviving are his daughter, Pamela Wable, York; his son, Thomas Wable of Garnet Valley; along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. After graduating from Confluence High School in 1940, Bill moved to Akron, Ohio where he attended Akron University and worked various jobs before entering WWII with the Army Air Corps in 1944. Bill served at various locations in the Pacific Theater and later with the occupational forces in Japan. Beginning in 1950 and for over 30 years, Bill drove long distance for freight companies, Motor Cargo and Consolidated Freightways, before retiring in 1982. He took pride in being a member of the Confluence Lions Club and was an avid golfer. The family asks that any memorials be sent to local Alzheimer’s organizations in lieu of cards and flowers. Internment will be in Mound View Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Ohio, where family will gather for a private ceremony.

Wade E. Helvey, 92, of Laurel View Village, formerly of Somerset, died Oct. 27, 2012 at Laurel View. Born Aug. 26, 1920 in Somerset Township, he is the son of the late Henry and Iris (Helvey) Southern. Also preceded in death by his wife, Betty M. (Stark) Helvey, to whom he was married 65 years; brother Robert and sister Peggy. Survived by a sister, Maxine Southern of Glen Burnie, Md.; and nieces and nephews: Judy and Jesse Klink of Rockwood; Dennis and Tammy Sprock of Connellsville; Craig and Cris Sprock of Davidsville; and Michelle Stark Eyles of Phoenix, Ariz.; also seven great-nieces and nephews, and 10 great-great-nieces and nephews. Wade was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Somerset Lodge 358 F&AM, Consistory, Jaffa Shrine and Tall Cedars. A 70-year member of the American Legion Post 191 and the 55 and Over Speeders. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, a retired inspector for the state of Pennsylvania. Wade and Betty lived at their West Union Street residence for over 60 years and always enjoyed the neighbors. Margaret A. Leone, 49, of Confluence, passed away Oct. 27, 2012, at home. She was born April 11, 1963, a daughter of Luther B. "Herk" Nace of Confluence and the late Anna M. (Diehl) Nace. She is survived by her father; husband, Joseph M. Leone; son, Seth Joseph; daughter, Sable E.; and brother, Byron Nace and wife, Christa, all of Confluence. Margaret was a graduate of Turkeyfoot Valley Area High School, class of 1981. She attended the United Community Church of God, was a pack master and leader of Cub Scout Pack 155, a member of Turkeyfoot Valley School District board of directors, Turkeyfoot PTSO, Confluence Women's Civic Club, Ursina Band, and was employed by Turkeyfoot Transportation and was a former employee and volunteer at Turkeyfoot Valley schools. Thomas H. Rice Sr., 75, of Somerset, formerly of Stoystown, passed on Oct. 28, 2012, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. Born May 18, 1937, in Somerset, he is the son of the late Carl Rice Sr. and Freda (Conner) Rice. He is also preceded in death by his wife Jane in 2008; sisters Fay Woy and Pat Young; and brothers Carl Rice Jr. and Claude Rice. Thomas is survived by his children Tammy Hottle and husband Graham of Berlin, Stacy Krisch and husband Ron of Somerset, Thomas H. Thomas was a coal miner for GM&W Coal in Pa. and later, the Fetterolf Group, which led to his move to Utah where he served as a mine manager. He then worked and eventually retired from the Tram Electric Co. in Utah where he worked as a sales manager. He lived with Jane for 27 years in Utah before returning to Somerset. They loved traveling throughout the West and going on cruises. He was an avid Steelers fan. He spent a large part of his life in his workshop designing custom wood creations for family and friends. Of the thousands of pieces he created, several won first-place awards at the Utah State Fair, which brought him a great joy after retirement. Family and friends will be received from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday with a service to follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Reading Grace Brethren Church, pastor Larry Weigle officiating. Victor Sterling of Palm Bay, Fla., formerly of Central City, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at the age of 39. Born Sept. 23, 1973, in Somerset Hospital. He was the son of James Croyle of Central City and Brenda Dowdell of Daytona Beach, Fla. He was predeceased by his brother Christopher Croyle. Survivors include his parents, two sons, Victor Jr. and Nathaniel, both of Florida, former wives and mothers of his sons, Stephanie Marti-Pope and Misti Cassidy Croyle and present girlfriend Jennifer Fisher, all in Florida. He is survived by brothers Jeff Overman of Johnstown, Charlie Croyle of Alabama, sisters Allyson Mellott of Erie, and Cassie Fredianelli of Florida. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and many friends in Florida and Pennsylvania. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Born April 20, 1951, in Coral Gables, Fla., she is the daughter of the late Elmo and Alice (Hartline) Wade. She is also preceded in death by her husband Dale in 2011; son Kenneth in 2012; and brothers Richard and Perry Wade. Laura is survived by her son Kevin Hauger and wife Michelle of Rockwood; daughter Amy Mangiafico and husband Paul of New Paris; and grandchildren Kelly, Kevin, Carrie, William, and Nick Hauger. Laura enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attended the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Rockwood. Jane Elizabeth (Hamer) Cooper, 86, of Elizabeth Township, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012. Born Dec. 12, 1925 in Johnstown, a daughter of the late Kerby N. and Elsie E. Williamson Hamer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Cooper; sister, Anne C. Hamer; and stepsister, Janet A. (the late Robert) Carringer. She was a graduate of Bucknell University where she was a member of the Social Studies and Secondary Education Honors Societies. A retired teacher from the South Allegheny School District, after 27 years of service, Mrs. Cooper was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in White Oak, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Elizabeth Township, Conemaugh Township, Hooversville and the Somerset County Historical Societies. She was an avid Bridge & 500 card player, and also had a lifelong interest in genealogy, working with her cousin Maryan to write two family histories. She loved history and traveling with her family. She also taught piano in her home. Surviving are her son, Mark J. Cooper and her daughter, Amy Elizabeth Cooper, both of Elizabeth Township; sister in law, Audrey (the late Edward) Joseph; cousins: Maryan G. (Stan) Yoder; James H. (Colleen) Williamson; Jack Shaffer and Anneva Jones; nephews and nieces. Also surviving are loving friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by parents; brothers: Harold, Kenneth, Wilfred, James and Ralph Laughery. He is survived by his wife, the former Marilyn Mildred Menser, to whom he was married 32 years; children: Gloria J. Walker and husband Ronald of Rockwood; Donald Laughery married to the former Mary McGowan of Mechanicsburg; Jennifer Bittinger and husband Matthew of Rockwood; grandchildren: Ronald Walker, Matthew Walker, Sharon Laughery, Kevin Laughery and Preston Bittinger. Ray is a 1947 graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School. He worked until his retirement as a wood turner for Laughery Wood Turning. He was also a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
